We are the world...

Back in March I attended a half day Media Conference in Irvine.  There were workshops taught by a variety of people with expertise in a variety of areas.  Among those that I attended were one taught by a recent former Disney Ambassador, and one by the OC Register Community Engagement Editor.  I know, there's no "proof in the pudding" of my blog that I learned anything.  Nonetheless, it was interesting, informative and enjoyable.

One new thing that I did learn was about a website called KIVA.org.  It is a website where people can go to contribute to individuals in need of a loan in various places around the world.  The home page pops up with pictures of a number of different people.  You can click on a picture and read the amount of the loan the individual has applied for and what that loan will enable them to do.  This site is staffed by volunteers so the money contributed goes to the people, not to administration (though there is an optional, small amount you can give to operating expenses if you are so inclined).  You can contribute as little as $25 towards whatever you choose.  I have found that most of us want to help others.  We just aren't sure how to go about it and how we can put our money to the best use.  And yes, there are even some from the United States.

I'm new to KIVA so I haven't had my loan paid back yet.  But I'll let you now how it goes.  In the meantime, feel free to try it out for yourself.
